The illustrated book of canaries and cage-birds, British and foreign . ous, by which order may be evolved out of this chaos, thecontinually disturbing element being the latent tendency towards irregular variegation; and wehave shown another solution in which the chief opposing force is difference in form. As in moststruggles, so in this : the tougher the work the more brilliant the victory. The former plan, whensuccessful, produces the most perfect birds at all points ; the latter, just in proportion as it may beeasier, gives us specimens in which, perhaps, the fastidious eye of a fancier can detect, not positiveblemishes, but a possible trace of some foreign family likeness in connection with the requiredfeature now beautifully grafted on the parent stock. Either plan has its advantages, and eachaffords ample scope for the ability of the breeder. We furnish on the preceding page an illustration of the ornithological regions of the bodyof a small bird, for explanation both of what has been advanced, and also for future generalreference. It is from Cassells Canaries and Cage Biros
