A burnt and stark tree-lined hillside. Full colour horizontal image. Royal Natal National Park, Drakensberg, South Africa

Royal Natal national park was founded in 1916. It covers over 8,000 hectares including the Drakensberg Mountains, the highest range of mountains in South Africa. It also contains the Amphitheatre wall which is 1,000 metres high and stretches over 5 km and is site to the World's second highest waterfall, the Tugela Falls. The park is part of the greater World Heritage site, Drakensberg Ukhahlamba National Park. The park undergoes regular controlling burning so that plant growth does not lead to extremely hazardous fire situations
