King Richard and Bolingbroke

Pictured here are King Richard II of England and Henry of Bolingbroke, later Henry IV of England. Henry ruled 1399 to 1413, opposed Richard II in 1387, and was one of the lords appellant who ruled England for a year. After accusing the duke of Norfolk of treason against Richard, Henry was banished for six years. Pictured here in this 1902 illustration is Richard with the order of banishment for Henry of Bolingbroke. Richard's rule was unpopular, and, when Richard was away in 1399, Henry landed in England and claimed the throne, founding the Lancastrian dynasty.
