The lowestblood pressure existing prior toinjection in any case in which itwas performed was 80 systolic, associated with carcinoma of thehead of the pancreas and obstruc-tion of the common duct. Thehighest blood pressure was 180systolic, associated with nephritisand slight odema. One patient showed no evidence of damagefrom the procedure. Other thanthese we have had no ill-effectfrom pneumoperitoneum. Evidently, therefore, the condi-tions in which pneumoperitoneumshould not be induced can bebriefly tabulated: First. Cardiac lesions withmarked decompensation and ir-regularity. Page Eighteen PNEUMOPERITONEUM— SAXTE Second. Advanced cases ofnephritis with odema and veryhigh blood Fig. 9.—Gallbladder filled with stones. Third. Acute intra-abdominallesions. Fourth. Acute pulmonary le-sions, such as pnemonia. We must remember that theadoption of this method is compar-atively recent, and that furtherimprovements in conditions ormethods of technique may befound later, which will render thismethod much more useful. Even, however, if no improvements weremade, the method has proven ofsufficient usefulness to be firmlyestablished as an addition to thearmamentorium of radiologicalmethods. The institution of thismethod opens up many possibili-ties for investigation among radi-ologists, and some of these willbe dealt with in a future commu-nication.
