The exhaust lead by this device increases asthe cut-off is shortened. This secures a maximum powerwhile starting and a sufficient late compression to preventthe terminal pressure from exceeding the initial pressureat high speeds without by-pass or compression valves. The valve gear makes use of the Stephenson link,eccentrics and rocker arm as far as the end of the valve ing about one-eighth inch more lead for the shorter cut-off. The steam chests are fitted with a ten-inch bushing andthe valves have cast iron packing strips which are freeto move and adjust themselves to any irregularities inthe seat, thus reducing the leakage.
