De Jussieu's cedar of Lebanon sapling. Historical artwork of the French botanist Bernard de Jussieu (1699-1777), bringing to France the first cedar of Lebanon (Cedrus libani), to be planted at the Jardin du Roi (King's Garden), Paris. De Jussieu is said to have carried the seedling in the crown of his hat to keep it safe. He collected the seedling tree from Britain in about 1734, as a present for the French King Louis XV. The cedar of Lebanon had been introduced into Britain from the eastern Mediterranean in the 1670s.
