Onboard the German Frers designed 76FT Dutch maxi yacht FLYER skippered by Cornelis van Rietschoten. 18 year old New Zealander Erle Williams (left) and fellow Kiwi, 21 year old Grant Dalton gained their first break in ocean racing, Williams as watch captain and Dalton as sailmaker aboard the race-winning yacht - the first to win both line and handicap honours in the history of the race. Both went on to achieve greatness in the sport. Erle Williams has competed in 5 Whitbread/Volvo Races: 1981–82 FLYER 1997–98 SWEDISH MATCH, 2001–02 DJUICE DRAGONS, 2005–06, PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN , 2008–09 IL MOSTRO, and also skippered the winning Volvo 70 yacht RS COMPONENTS in the 2003 Volvo Baltic Regatta. Grant Dalton, is another famous veteran competing in 1981–82 FLYER, 1985–86 LION NEW ZEALAND, 1989–90 FISHER & PAYKEL, 1993–94 NZ ENDEAVOUR, 1997–98 MERIT CUP, 2001–02 AMER SPORTS ONE, and is one of the few to win the race more than once: 1981–82 FLYER & 1993–94 NZ ENDEAVOUR.
