V. Henry of Company D, Third Cavalry,and Colonel Royal, who brought up re-enforcements, which prevented the cuttingoff and, of course, consequent cutting up of this troop. In the melee Captain Henrywas shot through the face. The gallant officer, with blood rushing from his mouth,kept on his horse, although for the time being completely blinded; finally he fellfrom the saddle fainting and exhausted. So close together were the contestantsthat a party of howling Sioux actually charged over the captains prostrate they were quickly repelled, as was the whole hostile line.
