This hand-painted sign in the Old Town at Hastings, East Sussex, England, UK, celebrates fearsome English Caribbean pirate Edward ‘Blackbeard’ Teach or Thatch (c. 1680-1718). Each side features a different version of an 18th century artwork showing him with smoking slow-burning fuses or matches under his tricorn hat. Hastings did have an historic reputation as a haven for smugglers and today it celebrates an annual ‘Pirate Day’ in July, when residents dress up as buccaneers. The south coast town now promotes itself as ‘The Pirate Capital of the World’.
