Artist/engraver/cartographer: Philippe Buache. Provenance: The map was extracted from a composite atlas of early 18th century maps, the latest of which was dated c1754. Type: Large antique 18th century atlas map, printed on thick, good quality paper with original outline hand colour/color divided into two parts. Decorative title cartouche and two vignette cross-sectional ocean profiles. The map is divided diagonally into two parts. The upper left part of the sheet details the coast of Brazil, the coast of West Africa, and the Atlantic Ocean separating them. There is a cross section of the ocean floor between Rio Grande del Norte and Cap Tagrin (Freetown, Sierra Leone) at the top of the sheet. The lower right part charts the Brazilian island of Fernando de Noronha, with a chart of the ocean floor around it.
