Bathers at Asnières by Georges Seurat, oil on canvas, 1884. Asnières is an industrial suburb north-west of Paris on the River Seine. The painting shows a group of young people bathing by the river. This was the first of Seurat's large-scale compositions. It wasn't painted using his pointillist technique, which he developed later. However, he reworked areas of the picture, using dots of contrasting colour, to create a luminous effect.
