Each mem-ber of the BasilianCommunity receivesan allowance of eightydollars a year for per-sonal expenditure. Imention this to makeclear that the staff ofSt. Michaels hasmanifested a spirit ofnoble generosity bygiving to every RedCross collection, outof its little all, a high-er proportion of theirsalary than any otherbody of men. Theyhave given till it hurt. Another very im-portant, if not themost important in-. fluence of the war which St. Michaelsshares with all other colleges is the taskof adjusting itself to changed conditionsand putting in the proper perspective theobjects and lessons of these years of freshmen were mere childrenwhen the war began. From now onstudents will never know as the staff will,the happy times before the war. On theother hand many a mistake will be madeby professors who fail to realize theoutlook of those who have not livedmature lives under both conditions. Itis one of the first duties of a Canadiancollege to teach that Canada entered this war with twentythousand men a few hours after England was engaged and haspoured them across the ocean in a steady stream ever since,not because she feared invasion and subjection, not becauseshe would be more prosperous, not even because Germany-violated sworn treaties, but because she was loyal to Englandand the British Empire.
