It will doubtless surprise many peo- ple who do not live in New York, just as it surprised many who do, to learn that there is, on Manhattan Island, 57 acres of land available for a park, without a wholesale wrecking- of build- ing's. It would not be strictly correct to call it all vacant property, for a part of it was the estate of C. K. G. Billings, a gentleman who has been a patron of horticulture. Tryon Hall, erected by Mr. Billings for a residence, is in the heart of the proposed park and stands on the highest point on Manhattan Island. It commands a view of the Hudson river for miles, of the harbor and Statue of Liberty and a wide area on Long Island, and a part of West- chester county. On the Billings estate the other buildings are such as are usually found on a gentleman's place. It is unlikely that much change will be made in the landscape features of this part of the park, as its late owner had spent large sums in Improving it, having at different times employed skillful landscape architects and gar- deners.
