Humber Bridge in landscape format looking North West from South bank of the River Humber

The Humber Bridge spans the Humber Estuary from Barton-on-Humber in North Lincolnshire to Hessle in the East Riding of Yorkshire, near Kingston-upon-Hull. It is 2,200 metres (7280ft) long and when opened in 1981 was the longest single-span suspension bridge in the world. The north tower is built on solid ground in the East Riding whilst the south tower stands in the river and needed considerable foundations laid to provide a sufficiently stable base.
