Many streams from the Sierra are still building up the floor ofthe valley plain with their flood deposits. The streams flow inshallow channels and are easily turned aside to irrigate the land. The great port of San Francisco, on the fine bay of thesame name, owes its rapid growth to the discovery ofgold in the SierraNevada and tothe wonder- ful fertilityof the valley Orange Grove, California. San Francisco bay is thedrowned valley of a river that oncecut through the mountains. It is theonly break in the Coast range west of the Sierra Nevada, and formsone of the best harbors in the world.
