Roof with red tiles and white pointed as typical in Skagen Skagen Denmark
The special yellow color is called "Skagen-gul" - in English: "Skagen Yellow". It was developed by architect Ulrik Plesner who came to Skagen in 1891, where he joined the bohemian and internationally celebrated painter colony, which counted among others Ancher, Krøyer and Drachmann - all inspired by the special light of Skagen, due to its position between the two sea, Skagerak and Kattegat. The Skagen version of Yellow was created by Plesner and the acceptance of the local fishing families of the artist colony in their small and pour town can be seen from the fact that many houses was and still is in that color. The color has later on become very popular in Denmark and many houses are today seen with that particular color.
