WHAT LIES BENEATH
Steetley Magnesite is an incredible site for anyone who is interested in the industrial side of photography and particularly urban dereliction. Originally built in the 1930s to produce magnesium, the site closed after two failed attempts to keep it running in 2005. Many parts of this site have now been demolished, but any further demolition has been halted because the site is a habitat for nesting birds. The plan was to build 500 homes on the site, but it currently stands still with no further development planned in the immediate future. (ePHOTOzine) The area has now become a playground for local children and the press have labeled it a 'death trap'. The site is located next to an attractive and clean beach and is felt to be an eyesore and a blot on the landscape, especially when viewed from the beach and looking inland; the contrast could not be greater. (bluemothphotography) This is a view of one of the original settling tanks used in the process of reacting dolomite lime with seawater to produce Magnesite – used to manufacture refractory bricks for the steel industry. The walkway to the control cab has long since collapsed into the tank basin.
