A Palestinian shouts anti-Israeli slogans in front of Israeli policemen during a protest against what organizers said was "land confiscation" by Israel to make way for the controversial barrier in the West Bank town of Beit Jala, near Bethlehem. Palestinians from all religious backgrounds, including Eastern Christian Orthodox, Roman Catholic, and Muslim came together on Sunday to protest Israeli land confiscations in Bir’ona, a suburb of the West Bank city of Beit Jala. The land in question belongs to the Church, and even though an Israeli High Court decision ruled that other routes must be found for the cement barrier, a July 2015 decision by the Israeli High Court overturned the ruling. Israeli bull dozers have already razed olive trees. Israeli soldiers were stationed in Bir’ona, waiting for protesters. The soldiers fired tear gas at protesters, some of whom were members of the clergy. The case garnered worldwide attention since the cement barrier will separate Christian Palestinians from their olive groves and cut much of the church land, including a monastery into two halves, making one half inaccessible as it will be in Israel proper, in which Palestinians have no permission to go to.
