SPOT 4 earth observation satellite over its launch site, artwork. SPOT 4 was launched by the European Space Agency in 1998 from the Guiana Space Centre (Centre Spatial Guyanais), near Kourou in French Guiana. Korou is at lower centre, at the mouth of the river, while the spaceport facilities range from Korou towards upper left along the coast. SPOT 4 is part of the SPOT (Satellite Pour l'Observation de la Terre) family of satellites, operated by a company created by the French space agency (CNES). The SPOT 4 satellite improved on the first three SPOT satellites with the addition of infrared mapping capabilities.
