A scene from a Steam Rally featuring a McLaren Traction Engine - West Sussex


A Mclaren 8nhp Traction Engine built in 1911. The works number: 1242 Here it is pictured to one side with an overall view of the showground at the Wiston Park Steam Rally in the South Downs National Park. The South Downs in the background has to the left topping the hill the ancient Iron Age hill fort of Chanctonbury Ring. Purchased from new the Mclaren traction engine began life in Waimate, South Island, New Zealand. Owned by Ruddenklaa it drove a threshing mill and was used on contract hire. In 1969 the engine was purchased by George Winter and over the next two years was restored. Owned by George and John Winter from Timaru, South Island, New Zealand the engine is currently in the UK and show at Wiston by Michael Lugg after it made an appearance at the Great Dorset Steam Fair in 2010.
