Snake tunnel. The fence guides snakes towards the tunnel under the road. This prevents them crossing the road and being killed by cars. Photographed in Manitoba, Canada, famous for the world's largest congregations of snakes. Red-sided garter snakes (Thamnophis sirtalis parietalis) emerge from their underground dens in the spring, after hibernating during the winter. The large numbers of snakes (in excess of 65,000) can lead to increased mortality rates unless measures such as this are taken.
