The inland port of Wisbech, 10 miles up the River Nene was a major port in the days of sail and still sees occasional cargo ships bringing timber from the Baltic and taking various cargoes, in particular scrap metal. the route to the sea., goes through Sutton Bridge where the eponymous swing bridge carrying the A17 road opens to let ships through. Just above the bridge is Sutton Bridge power station while just below is the port of Sutton Bridge, opened in 1987, with its length of quay on the west bank.
