Speyer Cathedral, officially the Imperial Cathedral Basilica of the Assumption and St Stephen, in Latin: Domus sanctae Mariae Spirae (German: Dom zu Unserer lieben Frau in Speyer) has been added in 1981 to the UNESCO World Heritage List of culturally important sites as "a major monument of Romanesque art in the German Empire". The church has been ordered by emperor Conrad II as the largest church of the world in 1025. It was also supposed to be his last resting place. Start of the constructions took place in 1030. Nearly completed, the cathedral was consecrated in 1061.
