The power of cosmic rays is shown in this emulsion photo of a cosmic ray sulphur nucleus. The nucleus enters at top & collides with a nucleus in the emulsion. The collision produces a spray of other particles: a fluorine nucleus (the dense track heading straight down the picture), other nuclear fragments (denser tracks) & 16 pions (fainter tracks). The length of the sulphur track is 0. 11 mm. The curlicues adorning the sulphur track are electrons it has knocked out of atoms in passing. The photo was taken in 1950 by Cecil Powell, the English physicist who pioneered the use of photographic emulsions to record particle tracks.
