In 1846, the portion south of the Potomac was retro-ceded to Virginia. It is not known when the first white settler came to the land whereWashington now sits. Nearby a tribe of the Conoy Indians had a largesettlement on Anacostia Creek, which they called Nacotchtank, from whichthe present name of Anacostia is a corruption. President Washington, who it is said was largely responsible for theselection of the new site to which he had often ridden from his estate atMt. Vernon, some miles down the Potomac River,
