In 1846, the portion south of the Potomac was retro-ceded to Virginia. It is not known when the first white settler came to the land whereWashington now sits. Nearby a tribe of the Conoy Indians had a largesettlement on Anacostia Creek, which they called Nacotchtank, from whichthe present name of Anacostia is a corruption.
