View E of the double-naved church dedicated to bishop-saint Saeran at Llanynys, Denbighshire, Wales, UK. The oldest part of the church is the W door & N nave (L) of c 1220 which was extended eastwards in the C15th when the S nave (R) was built. More rebuilding took place in 1768. This photo, taken in 1992 with the plaster removed from the external walls, shows the limestone rubble & red sandstone blocks of the original build & the lines where the roof level was raised & the E end extended. Photographed in May 1992 partway through renovation work at the church. The walls have since been covered over again & painted white, trees trimmed & the graveyard tidied. When the plaster was removed from beside the W door human skulls & bones were found in three blocked up niches. The two bells, dated 1680, on wheels in the double bellcote on the W end of the S nave became unsafe & have been removed. Llanynys was established in the C6th as a 'clas' site dedicated to St Saeran, the Celtic monastic community subsequently became a college of canons. The name Llanynys refers an island of slightly raised ground between two rivers in the swampy floor near the centre of the Vale of Clwyd.
