He shot Jackson through the heart with abullet, and pierced his body several times with his body was borne in sadness to Washington, wherefuneral services were held in the East Room of the White House,with President Lincoln as chief mourner. Ellsworth was a veryyoung and attractive officer, and greatly beloved for his braveryand patriotism. His death produced great excitement throughoutthe country.
