The sectorgear is not rigidly fastened on the radial arm, but carries ashort crank which bears against the radial arm in closing thedoor. The door, therefore, may be closed by hand by a plat-form guard without moving the sector gear or the air piston. The striking edge of the door is fitted with a novel steel-cushion shoe, which prevents any injury to a person who maybe caught between the door and the jamb as the door isclosing. This device consists of a U-shaped pressed-steel shoeabout 6y2 in. wide and the full height of the door, which fitsloosely pver the striking edge of the door. It is carried bytwo studs, which are fitted into the ends of two pivoted bell-. Interborough Steel Car—Section Through Bottom ofCenter Door Post crank arms mounted inside the door stile. These studs workin radial slots in the door and when any pressure is appliedon the shoe, it is forced back against the edge of the upper bell crank has a short horizontal arm, which is con-nected with a vertical rod and turnbuckle to a horizontal armon the lower bell crank. When the shoe is forced back, eitherat the top or bottom, the studs move in the radial slots androtate both bell cranks simultaneously. The lower bell crankis T-shaped and the bottom vertical arm is connected to around rod, which runs back through the bottom door rail andprojects beyond the door about 6 in. On the end of this rodis a cam engaging with a fixed pawl on the back edge of thedoor and sliding on a square rod 5 ft. 3 in. long parallel tothe bottom door track. When the bell cranks are moved byany pressure on the shoe, the round rod in the door is pulledforward,
