Long exposure image looking towards Tower Bridge and More London Place.
This long exposure image was taken using the Lee Big Stopper. It was taken on the roof of St. Magnus House in Lower Thames Street, London and shows the view towards Tower Bridge and More London Place. Old Billingsgate is on the far left. Tower Bridge (built 1886–1894) is a combined bascule and suspension bridge which crosses the River Thames. It is close to the Tower of London, from which it takes its name. The bridge consists of two towers tied together at the upper level by means of two horizontal walkways, designed to withstand the horizontal forces exerted by the suspended sections of the bridge on the landward sides of the towers. The vertical component of the forces in the suspended sections and the vertical reactions of the two walkways are carried by the two robust towers. The bascule pivots and operating machinery are housed in the base of each tower. The bridge's present colour scheme dates from 1977, when it was painted red, white and blue for Queen Elizabeth II's silver jubilee. Originally it was painted a mid greenish-blue colour. More London is a development on the south bank of the River Thames, immediately south-west of Tower Bridge in London. The development includes City Hall, a sunken amphitheatre called The Scoop, office blocks, shops, restaurants, cafes, and a pedestrianised area containing open-air sculptures and water features. Old Billingsgate Market is the name given to what is now a hospitality and events venue in the City of London, based in the Victorian building that was originally Billingsgate Fish Market, the world's largest fish market. The first Billingsgate Market building was constructed on Lower Thames Street in 1850 by the builder John Jay, and the fish market was moved off the streets into its new riverside building. This was demolished in around 1873 and replaced by an arcaded market hall designed by City architect Horace Jones and built by John Mowlem & Co. in 1875, the building that still stands on the site today.
