The common-ones— the Thunbergia alata (fig. 600 a) and auran- tiaca, with their beautiful varieties—are the abomination of gardeners, because they say that they are readily infested with in- sects ; but that is only the case when the plant is not grown sufficiently fast. The T. fragrans is a charming plant for the fernery, and not very common, and T. lauri- folia (fig. 60s) is above all praise, for in the months of December it yields delicate blue flowers which are extremely ornamental. A variegated-leaved vine has lately come into use, but although it looks pretty in pots I have found it worthless out of doors.
