The reversible principleof dynamo and motor is alreadyfamiliar to street railway engineers, but the way in which the compres-sor has been made reversible is in-teresting. The compressor is of thetrunk piston type, and contains in-let valves and piston, the outlet valveE, see cut, allowing the air taken in toescape into the pressure chamber port C during the act of com-pression is closed, and therefore theapparatus acts like an ordinary com-]jressor. When the circuit is brokenthe machine is deprived of powerfrom outside, and has to slow downsomewhat. The specially designedgovernor then changes its position, due to slight reduction in speed, andbegins to operate a piston valve incylinder A, which distributes air tothe cylinders and also allows it to es-cape through the exhaust; the port C serving alternately as anin-take and exhaust port. The piston valve is of the well-. -^xj) Shijiit Bobbin Fibre Insulator Street Railway Juun SECTION OF SWITCH FOR SECTIONAL CONDUCTOR SYSTEM March 14, 1903.] STREET RAILWAY JOURNAL. 405 known hollow type. It is plain that during the action as anengine the valves in the piston will remain shut, for the pres-sure in the cylinder is greater than that of the outside air. Itis also equally apparent that the valve B will remain shut, forthe pressure in the tank is always higher than the pressure inthe cylinder. The machine is connected between the shoe andthe ground, a resistance being provided in circuit therewithtQ keep the high voltage of the line from the commuta-tor. This circuit is equipped with a circuit breaker, andif for any reason power be cut off and the machine therebyattempts to drive the locomotive this circuit breaker opensand relieves the compressor. This will only happen in casethe circuit breaker at power house gives out, or in case thelocomotive was drifting over a cross-over
