Transferring blood into a specimen container using a needle
Using a needle to inject blood into a collection container is a common cause of contaminated sharps injury. These devices are designed to take blood using a specialised attachment, however in some areas, such as the ICU, where blood is usually taken from arterial cannulas, this does not work. Not all of these containers have screw tops, which means that there may be no other method of transferring the blood.
