A freighter transits Halifax Harbour, Nova Scotia, amidst sea smoke on the surface of the water.

Sea smoke forms on bodies of water in winter when the water temperature is actually warmer than the air that it comes into contact with, when the evaporation from the water surface occurs faster than the air can absorb the moisture. This generally requires air temperatures in the range of minus 20 degrees centigrade.
