Impetigo infection on the upper lip of a 26-year- old woman. Impetigo is a highly contagious skin infection caused by Staphylococcus bacteria. The infection starts as a red patch and develops into small pustules that merge to form a yellow, crusty sore. Patients must not share items like towels that touch the affected area, as this will spread the disease. Antibiotic drugs should heal the infection in about five days. This infection began following inflammation of the skin of the lip, or perioral dermatitis.
