. The Canadian field-naturalist. 436 The Canadian Field-Naturalist Vol. 90 Hills are apparently above the cold limits of Pinus ponderosa. Figure 4 shows general vegetation profiles along two north-south transects through the montane regions of East Butte. It can be seen that most of the montane coniferous forests are associated with the cool, shady north-facing slopes, and that grasslands generally dominate the drier south-facing slopes. A description of the coniferous forests and other major montane and subalpine plant communities of the Sweet- grass Hills follows. Montane Grassland. The grassland type covers most of the dry south-facing slopes and foothills between 1500 and 2000 m, as well as many of the non-forested portions of north- facing slopes. It is dominated by Festuca scabrella, Festuca idahoensis, and Potentilla fruticosa, and seems most closely related to the fescue prairie association described by Coup- land and Brayshaw (1953) and found by Breit- ung (1954) and Newsome and Dix (1968) to cover the higher plateaus of the Cypress Hills. A wide variety of species occurs in the many micro- habitats found within this grassland; these include Allium cernuum. Anemone patens, Arabis nuttallii, Arenaria congesta, Balsamor- rhiza sagittata, Besseya wyomingensis, Camp- anula rotundifolia, Carex phaeocephala, Cas- tilleja cusickii, Castilleja lutescens, Claytonia lanceolata var. multiscapa, Collinsia parvijlora, Delphinium bicolor, Draba aurea, Draba nem- orosa, Erigeron compositus, Fritillaria pudica, Geranium viscosissimum, Geum triflorum, Hedy- sarum alpinum, Juniperus communis, Juniperus horizontalis, Lomatium cous, Lomatium tri- ternatum, Lupinus argenteus, Potentilla gra- cilis, Ranunculus glaberrimus, Saxifraga oc- cidentalis, Sisyrinchium angustifolium, Solidago multiradiata, Townsendia parryi, and Ziga- denus Figure 4.
