Pearson's Jupiter clock, rear view. This clock was designed by the British astronomer the Reverend William Pearson (1767-1847). It is called the 'Jupiter clock' because a model of Jupiter and its four known Galilean satellites is at top centre (yellow), rotated by the clock mechanism to allow accurate predictions of the positions of the moons. Pearson was one of the founding members of the Astronomical Society of London, which became the Royal Astronomical Society in 1831. He received the Society's Gold Medal in 1829. Pearson was renowned as a designer and builder of clocks, orrery's and other such devices to track the movement of the planets in the skies. His first designs are from 1796, and this one dates from just before 1800.
