Great Lakes 118: a distinct, Asgrow strain of this popular variety Days GRAND RAPIDS, 43 One of the most popular loose-leaved varieties. Plants erect and compact; leaves light green, broad, wavy, curly, and heavily fringed. GREAT LAKES 118, , the Asgrow strain 83 One of the most popular solid-headed varieties, widely adapted, slow to bolt and with considerable resistance to tipburn. Leaves large, thick and glossy, with heavy ribs. This strain has been carefully and con- tinuously selected for uniformity of size and type, with pleasing, lustrous dark green exterior. The dark, upright, wrapper leaves give good protection to the large, well-formed heads. GREAT LAKES 59, 78 An early, different, somewhat smaller strain. Wrapper leaves lie back, exposing the attractive large, round, slightly flattened head at market stage. Color lighter than regular Great Lakes, a gray green; leaves smoother and much less frilled at the edge. HANSON (Nonpareil), 80 An old hardy variety for home and market gardens. Head large, globular, compact; leaves large, broad and curly, light yellowish green. Iceberg, 84 For home gardens and local markets. Head soft, crumpled, with light green leaves tinged at the edges with reddish brown. Quite different from the ship- ping variety, New York, which is usually called Iceberg in the produce trade. Imperial No. 44, 82 A development from Imperial No. 152; heads better in warm weather and is appreciably less subject to tipburn. Hard, well formed head, with long leaves. Imperial No. 152, .# 83 Resistant to brown blight and dependable in heading. Head medium large, solid, attractive; long, well folded Please note that these images are extracted from scanned page images that may have been digitally enhanced for readability - color
