WASHINGTON. Tbe Market. A drop in the temperature of from 100 degrees to about 54 degrees caused a shortening up of the rose supply. Due to the cold, many of the growers have been forced to start steam in the houses. This is unprecedented in this section, for ordinarily the growers would not have started their fires for several weeks. The call for American Beauty roses last week was slightly heavier than it has been. Carnations are coming in better shape, the blooms being larger and the stems longer. The production and call for yellow and white chrysanthemums both have in- creased to quite an extent. A majority of the stores are now holding their an- nual fern and palm sales and all report good business. The sales at the Gude and the Kramer stores are perhaps larger this year than ever and the stock is exceptionally good. Various Notes. The local florists have picked out Sep- tember 30 as the day on which they will visit the annual show at White Marsh, Md., held by B. Vincent, Jr., & Sons Co. The bowling club is going and will doubtless have an opportunity of trying its skill against the Baltimore team on the return from White Marsh. It is expected that a larger number of Wash- ingtonians will this year make the trip than ever before. Mr. and Mrs, Elmer C. Mayberry have returned from a vacation spent at Piney Point, Md. Among the visitors in town last week were Will Eehder, of Wilmington, N. C; Robert Shoch, with M. Rice Co., Philadelphia; Mr. Flood, of Hammond- ton, N. Y.; Charles McCarthy, with Car- )t)one, of Boston, and J. Prentice Brown, who formerly visited this territory for Kohn, Adler & Co., Philade
