In 1614 a stockade, called Fort NOOKS AND CORNERS Manhattan, was built as a temporaryplace of shelter for representatives of theUnited New Netherland Co., which hadbeen formed to trade with the company was replaced by theDutch West India Co., with charteredrights to trade on the American coast,and the first step towards the forming ota permanent settlement was the buildingof Fort Amsterdam on the site of thestockade.
