Bose-Einstein condensate (BEC), temperature contour plot. This quantum mechanical phenomenon is a state of matter that exists at low temperatures close to absolute zero. In this state, the condensate exhibits microscopic quantum properties on a macroscopic scale. Across top is a condensate atom cloud forming (dark area) with decreasing temperature from left to right. The main image (bottom) shows the same condensate as a temperature contour plot. Tc is the critical temperature at which the condensate forms. The formation of the condensate is indicated by the sharp peak (and increasing density) in the temperature contour plot.
