The Gothic Rathaus was built 1405 - 1409, though the Weser Renaissance style balcony and gables by Lüder von Bentheim were added between 1609 - 1612. Spire of Kirche Unser Lieben Frauen rises on the right. In the square infront of the Rathaus is the 10 metre high statue of Roland, reputedly Germany's tallest representation of the knight. A symbol of civic freedom, it faces the cathedral and archbishops who had threatened the citizens privileges.
