At the Westmoreland Club in Richmond may beseen an oil painting of the Battle of Petersburg, pur-chased by the Norfolk and Western Railroad Companyfor $13,000 and presented to Gen. Mahone, the officerin charge of the Confederate troops. Final operations were commenced against Peters-burg, March 25, 1865, and after the battle of FiveForks, March 31 and April 1, it was evacuated April 2 and 3 and surrendered April 3, 1S65, completingone of the bloodiest and fiercest campaigns of thewar.
