The South Haven South Pierhead Light is an active lighthouse on Lake Michigan at the entrance of the Black River. The lighthouse was lit in 1903. The catwalk is the original structure that connects the lighthouse with shore and is only one of four left at Michigan lighthouses. The lighthouse is listed on the National Register of Historic Places and is designated as a Michigan state historic site. As is often the case the pier and lights can often be battered by high waves and active lake waters. On calmer days the pier by the lighthouse is often used by fishermen.
