Wikipedia: Hoedekenskerke is a village in the municipality of Borsele, in the Dutch province of Zeeland. The village has 715 inhabitants (January 1, 2021). Hoedekenskerke was once an important ferry port on the Western Scheldt, with services to Terneuzen and Antwerp, among others. Until 1933 there was a small jetty near the village. In 1930 the ferry port was built in the former Kapuinhoek. This ferry port was equipped with a pontoon and an iron bridge. Thus, cars could easily be taken along. In 1933 a new motor ferry was built: the Koningin Emma. However, the harbor slowly silted up and the last ferry service, Hoedekenskerke-Terneuzen, was discontinued in 1972, causing a lot of activity in the village to disappear. After silting up, the harbor was soon converted into a port for passers-by called 'De Val'. Since 1998, a tourist bicycle and pedestrian ferry service has been maintained on Terneuzen from the passenger harbor during the summer months. The old 'waiting room' for passengers who made use of the ferry service, now stands as a monument on the harbor plateau of De Val passing through harbour. In 2010 the waiting room was demolished in connection with work on the dike, but thanks to the efforts of many, the old monument has been preserved: the building was lifted and moved in its entirety.
