The Our Lady of Ascension Church (Onze-Lieve-Vrouw Hemelvaartkerk) in Kaprijke (East Flanders), Belgium

The Our Lady of Ascension Church is the parish church of the East Flemish village of Kaprijke, located on the Voorstraat. The oldest mention of the church is from 1241, and the octagonal tower (then a crossing tower) dates from that time. Around 1500 the tower was raised by one section. A new southern aisle was built in 1525-1526 and in the middle of the 17th century the church was expanded into a three-aisled hall church. In 1755 the church burned down and in 1787-1788 a new church was built, most of it slightly west of the old one. However, the tower was spared and was incorporated into the new church building, which was built in a classicist style after a design by Joachim Colin. It is a three-aisled church with three-sided choir closure. The built-in tower has two sections on a square plan, above which three octagonal sections, capped with an octagonal spire. The tower is made of brick; it was painted white. The interior has also been whitewashed. The church has mostly 19th century paintings, as well as a Christ and the church allegory of 1711, which comes from the older church. There are also twelve 18th-century Stations of the Cross. The organ from 1724, was made by Louis Delhaye and the organ case by Claudius Chapuy is from the same year. The surrounding graveyard is believed to have been laid out shortly after 1788 and has some fine trees. The church and cemetery are classified as monuments and are part of the protected townscape.
