Commissioner Barendt takes an active interest in botli nationaland local politics, was formerly president of the Iroquois Club, andis still a member of that organization, as well as of the San Fran-cisco Democratic Club, the Bar Association and Press Club. His H. Manning, was a well-knownbanker and merchant of his son, the future HealthCommissioner, obtained his earlyeducation in the public schools, laterattending- the University of the Pa-cific at San Jose, and going East topursue his studies at the Hahnemann Medical College of Philadelphia,from which he was graduated in 1890. On coming to San Francisco Dr. Manning engaged in the practiceof medicine, and on April 17, 1907, was appointed Public HealthCommissioner by Mayor Eu
