The challenge ac-cepted, Daniel Oakley, of Company B of the Ii8th and abroad-shouldered fellow of the 25th were chosen for the com-petition. Oakleys tree was down in the designated directionin less than ten minutes. The New Yorker was far behind,and when his did fall, it dropped entirely away from the direc-tion indicated. The friends of the defeated man bore his dis-comfiture most ungraciously. As Oakley wiped the perspira-tion from his brow one of them deliberately seized the axe withwhich he had done his work, charging he had stolen it. Astruggle at once ensued.
