Crowds of local people, pupils and staff from the local “Britannia Bridge” primary school, line the banks of the Leeds and Liverpool canal as the former working barge Kennet passes by. The barge is at the head of a flotilla of boats, organised by the Leeds and Liverpool canal society, recreating a passage of the canal made in 200 years ago in 1816 that celebrated the opening of the canal. The original bridge here in the back ground has a stone inscription that reads “Opened 22nd October 1816”.
