View S over Bronze Age House III at Jarlshof, Sumburgh, Shetland, Scotland, UK: an oval house with a clover-leaf internal plan. Irregular wedge-shaped stone piers project into the interior forming compartments & supporting a timber-framed conical roof. A trough quern & mouler used for grinding grain (charred barley was found in one of the rooms) stands on the paved floor beside the main entrance. Cattle were kept in the adjacent House II. Around 800 BC, after this house had gone out of use, a travelling bronze-smith set up his workshop here. Iron Age houses were later built over the Bronze Age ones.
