Holothuria tubulosa sea cucumber, polarised light micrograph. This is a young specimen. The body has several tube feet, each with a terminal circle of short branches (shield-shaped). The tube feet are retractable. The dark shapes are the guts. The gut starts with the oesophagus enclosed by a calcareous ring, followed by a short stomach and then succeeded by the intestine leading to the cloaca (anus). This sea cucumber grows to 20 centimetres in length. It is found on the coasts of the English Channel. Magnification: x36 when printed at 10 centimetres across.
